History of Rochford

WEST STREET

Looking up West Street we are faced with so many old buildings (almost all with Listed Building status) where, for centuries, tradesman would have conducted business and lived.

In living memory, for some of our residents, the curry shop was Willans grocery shop, its face covered with advertising posters.

At that time the newsagents on the corner was a cycle shop. For many years, at the bottom of the street was a blacksmith’s and the story goes that horseshoes were prepared when time permitted, then thrown into the stream that, at that time meandered past.

Further up the street was a chemist shop, Arthur Harrington’s; the post office (in the brickwork today one can still see where the postbox was located); tearooms; the Rate Collectors office; bakers; and many others.
